Urban and Regional Planning

Welcome to the Research Group of Urban and Regional Planning!

The task of urban and regional planning is to orientate the future (spatial) development of cities and urban regions towards societal goals and to find forward-looking solutions for the future distribution of population, functions/land uses and resources. But how will society's housing, mobility and technology needs develop? What challenges does this pose for future urban development? What will our cities look like in the future and how will we live in them? How can we make our cities and urban districts liveable, healthy, green, compact and mixed? How will mobility, infrastructures and land uses develop in urban regions and in rural areas? What will the village of the future look like?

Globalisation, urbanisation, climate change, digitalisation and demographic change will have far-reaching effects on our society and the spatial transformation of cities and regions. With this background, our teaching and research focuses on the analysis and design of spatial transformation processes, e.g. the planning of climate-friendly cities, the implementation of environmentally friendly and socially just neighbourhood structures, the strengthening of social and spatial solidarity or the development of digital participation processes. The focus is on the critical examination of planning control options and practices as well as the communication and further development of methods, procedures and instruments of urban and regional planning.
