Bundle Up | Urban and Climate-Friendly Last Mile Solutions in the Real Estate Portfolio

The digitalisation of our economy and society means a profound upheaval for municipalities and retail. Online trade is decoupling shopping from stores and city centres and - accelerated by the Corona pandemic - is leading to a shift in turnover from stationary trade to the Internet. The result is a continuously growing volume of parcel and delivery traffic. At the same time, the centres and the stationary trade located there are characterised by frequency losses. In order to meet these challenges, the TU Dortmund University - Research Group of Urban and Regional Planning - and the IHK Mittleres Ruhrgebiet are working together with various practical partners on alternative concepts to conventional doorstep delivery as part of the "Bundle Up" project.

Duration: 7/2020 - 6/2022

"Bundle Up" deals with innovative last mile solutions in different types of cities, neighbourhoods and properties. Specifically, this involves pick-up stations for the collection of parcels, micro-deposits for the transfer to emission-free delivery vehicles - i.e. (e-)cargo bikes and small electric vehicles - as well as mobile pick-up solutions. The focus is on cross-provider solutions in the existing real estate portfolio. Through complementary service functions, they should create synergies for the centres and reduce traffic for door-to-door delivery.

The project aims to develop models for different locations in the district of the IHK Mittleres Ruhrgebiet (Bochum, Herne, Witten, Hattingen). Methodologically, the focus is on the highly inter- and transdisciplinary approach of design thinking, which offers various interfaces to the real life laboratory - for instance, when it comes to the test implementation in practice.
